The transition to college at any age can be challenging. Course load, social pressures and changes to friend network during this transition can cause anxiety, depression, burnout and relationship issues. These things can keep you awake at night, make it difficult to focus on your studies, lead you to engage in negative self-talk and unhealthy behaviors. I can help you develop coping strategies to help ease that transition so you can make healthy choices and achieve your educational goals.
Welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with adults navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma, particularly experiences related to family of origin and attachment. While I work with adults of all ages, I have a special interest in supporting emerging adults - including college, graduate, and medical students - as they manage the emotional and relational challenges that can arise during these stages of life. I support clients in addressing current life challenges while also seeking to answer questions about why these challenges exist in the first place. I do this through a collaborative, relational, and trauma-informed approach that blends deeper insight with practical support. Drawing from psychodynamic and attachment-based work, along with CBT, DBT, and mindfulness, I help clients understand patterns, regulate emotions, and build skills that support meaningful, lasting change. Starting therapy can feel uncertain, and it’s completely normal to have questions or mixed emotions. Please know you don’t have to figure it out on your own. I aim to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and understood. If you’re considering therapy, I invite you to reach out to see if we would be a good fit.
Currently offering in-person and virtual sessions for clients in Massachusetts and virtual-only sessions for clients in New York. As a dedicated therapist specializing in complex trauma and identity development, I am committed to creating a culturally sensitive, collaborative, non-judgmental, and engaging therapeutic space for my clients. Utilizing IFS and other trauma-focused modalities, I believe every individual possesses the innate potential to heal from their deepest wounds. Whether you face issues with boundaries, repeat behavior patterns, or have experienced complex PTSD or relational trauma, I am here to support your journey toward healing. In our work together, I will create a compassionate space to explore parts of yourself that carry shame or may have been dismissed or invalidated. I am attuned to your emotional needs and skilled in asking thoughtful questions that deepen your self-understanding. My goal is to help you lead an integrated life with courage, confidence, and clarity. Clients describe therapy with me as “deeply impactful,” with lasting benefits. I believe in everyone’s capacity to heal, even when the path seems unclear. Embarking on this journey of self-discovery can bring profound changes in how you connect with yourself, in relationships, and with the world around you. Take the first step and embrace the growth ahead.
I believe that the therapeutic journey begins with being able to allow yourself to move though what may be at times an uncomfortable experience to work towards positive long-lasting changes. Through exploring the different parts of yourself we can work to create a healthier whole version of you. With over 15 years of experience working with clients who have experienced relationship and sexual trauma, adjustment challenges, compulsive behaviors, anxiety and depression. I have extensive experience specifically working with the college aged population.

Whether you're worrying often, struggling with relationship stress and conflict, needing to process traumatic events, or wanting to experience a more loving sense of self, beginning therapy can be anxiety-provoking and takes courage. I hope to make your experience a little easier by listening with compassion and curiosity, moving at your pace, and centering the therapy around your needs. Do others describe you as overachieving, self-reliant, perfectionistic, or Type-A? Do you struggle with creating enough balance in your life? Do you lose track of your needs & desires, and then find yourself feeling burnt out or resentful of others? We will work together to help you feel more grounded and centered, develop effective communication skills, set & maintain boundaries that feel good, experience greater compassion towards yourself, and feel more connected to others. We can work through whatever barriers are getting in the way of creating more play, softness, love, rest & support in your life. I am trained in psychodynamic therapy & mindfulness-based somatic therapy, two powerful ways of working that promote greater awareness, connection, and sense of freedom. I welcome you to reach out for a phone consult & we can feel into if we're a good fit to work together.

My style is collaborative and flexible, tailored to your unique needs and goals. I look forward to helping you feel empowered, understood, and confident as you work toward growth and balance. My path to becoming a therapist grew from years of working closely with children and families as a nanny, dance teacher, and school-based clinician. These experiences in both clinical and school-based settings deepened my commitment to providing empathetic, developmentally informed care. In my practice now, I bring warmth, creativity, and genuine curiosity to each session, honoring every patient’s unique story. I am also planning to pursue my Doctor of Social Work, reflecting my commitment to ongoing growth, ethical practice, and providing thoughtful, high-quality care to every patient I serve. In both my personal and professional life, I value balance, self-reflection, and creative expression. Outside of therapy, I nurture my mind and body through creative movement, including dance, Pilates, yoga, meditation, mindfulness practices, and journaling. I also enjoy exploring spirituality, tarots, and manifestation for a well-rounded life.
It is both normal for us humans to get stuck, scared, or in our own way and also to need space and support to understand the cause of our struggles, face our fears, make changes, and grow. My goal as a therapist is to use our combined wisdom (your knowledge of yourself and your life, my experience and expertise), and sometimes that of my therapy dog Bella, to explore your concerns, increase awareness, insight, and self-compassion, identify options for change, and understand and respect what you choose to do as a result of this process. I have over 20 years experience as a psychotherapist and specifically working with university students (and staff), international persons, and musicians/performers.
I'm Dr. Akeisha Rivera and I'm a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). My goal is to help you become the best possible version of yourself so that you and your partner can rebuild your bond and make it stronger than ever before. As your therapist, I will be there with you every step of the way. You can trust me to be fully engaged in your process and growth. Through years of experience, I know that no problem is too great to overcome. I do this work because of my genuine desire to help couples connect so that life's challenges only bring them closer. Let's talk about how I can help your relationship thrive.
