Therapists for college students near 77005
I work with adolescents and adults suffering from mood and anxiety disorders, complex trauma, women’s issues, narcissistic abuse, attachment issues, and personality disorders. I also work with couples to improve communication, develop healthy conflict-resolution skills, and create a long-term family vision and mission that restores harmony in everyday life. I believe psychoeducation and a personalized mental health care plan empower clients to make lasting changes quickly. I create a unique treatment plan for each client with specific, measurable goals. I use therapeutic breathwork, CBT, and DBT to help clients quickly reduce symptoms while evaluating emotional and behavioral patterns that may require longer-term therapy. I approach personality disorders, attachment dysfunction, and identity confusion from a developmental and psychodynamic perspective and have experience treating borderline, narcissistic, and schizoid personality disorders. I earned my B.A. in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, and after a career as a business executive, returned to school in 2020, earning a Master of Science degree in clinical mental health counseling from Tarleton State University. I am an alumna of the national women’s leadership academy, Leadership America, and was selected in 2015 to be a patient advocate for the National Center for Healthcare Research in Washington, D.C. I am a writer, public speaker, and patient-first healthcare activist, and have published many written works about the dangers of using pharmaceuticals and medical devices cleared (not fully approved) through the FDA's lax 510k marketing process. I enjoy gardening, all forms of creativity and self-expression, love to learn, and believe that where there is humor, there is healing. My husband and I live in Central Texas and enjoy camping with our two dogs and parakeet. We have two adult sons and three granddaughters and believe in the restoration of family relationships as a path to well-being.
Many of the students I work with are thoughtful, hardworking, and care deeply about doing well — but inside, they often feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or disconnected. Some are managing big life changes like moving away from home, starting new relationships, or facing academic pressure. Others are dealing with past losses, identity questions, or mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, or self-criticism. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone — and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. I help students untangle complicated emotions, learn practical tools to manage stress, set healthy boundaries, and reconnect with what truly matters to them. Therapy with me is collaborative, down-to-earth, and focused on helping you build a life that feels more authentic, balanced, and meaningful.

Are you tired of people telling you how strong you are? Friends, family and even some therapists will often say this with the best of intentions. True healing, however, moves beyond pure resiliency. We must go further than just managing our emotions and begin to process and heal them so we can move through. As your therapist I will be both companion and challenger along your journey. I will walk alongside you and bring a genuine sense of compassion to any difficulties you may face. I offer a safe, open and non-judgmental space for you to find your own voice and equip you with tools to move forward and reach a more contented life. My therapeutic approach is integrative and incorporates a blend of cognitive behavioral, body based, emotion focused, family systems and relational orientations. I offer a holistic approach to treatment, taking into account your personality and life circumstances to create a specialized plan which reflects your own unique goals and gifts.

I’m a trauma-informed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who helps adults heal from the inside out. I specialize in working with those impacted by trauma, childhood abuse, PTSD, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, and emotional overwhelm. Many of my clients arrive feeling disconnected from themselves—exhausted by survival mode, unsure how to feel safe, or burdened by past experiences they were never given space to process. I provide a calm, supportive space where you don’t have to explain everything or be “strong” all the time. Together, we’ll explore what your nervous system has been holding and begin building the safety, clarity, and emotional regulation you need to feel more grounded and whole. My approach supports the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and physical responses—because healing isn't just in the mind; it happens through the body, too. I tailor each session to you. Whether you’re navigating trauma responses, managing daily anxiety, or trying to reconnect with who you are beneath the coping strategies, we will move at your pace—not the pace of pressure or performance. My work integrates evidence-based practices with deep compassion and curiosity. I offer therapy online only, serving adults in Texas and Hawai‘i, with appointments available Monday through Thursday.
College-age young adults experience their own unique challenges. In a time of new independence and exploration, there can be a lot of pressure and expectations on young adults to have their lives “figured out”. You may experience difficulties adjusting to a new environment and the challenges that come with that, such as moving away from home, managing your college course load, making friends, etc. Young adulthood also brings about new responsibilities related to school, work/career, and finances, like maintaining your own schedule and paying bills. Many of the college students I work with are dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, relationship issues, stress management, among other challenges. I provide young adult clients with the space to process and unpack their challenges, establish a trustworthy therapeutic relationship, and support them in building up their ability to cope with stress, understand their emotions, and meet their needs.
**Some Insurance Accepted in NC through Headway** I practice via telehealth in NY, NC, WA, and TX. I specialize in working with adult men and women who are secretly miserable. You may look fine on the outside, but inside you're struggling to get your own needs met, codependency, perfectionism, and shame. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking at just the cognitive, linear perspectives of the person. It demands of the therapist an awareness of the body and how it manifests in the psyche. Through its focus on process rather than content, the patient gains an experiential awareness of how they do what they do and new choices emerge spontaneously. The radical focus on process in the creative therapy of Gestalt keeps the work alive and full of possibility for both the patient and my work as a therapist. Melissa Bennett-Heinz obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work from Columbia University (Class of 2002) and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City, NY. In addition to her background in Gestalt Therapy, she obtained her bachelor's and master’s degrees from the esteemed conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, in New York City where she majored in Oboe Performance. Melissa completed cognitive behavioral studies under the tutelage of Dr. William Sanderson. She is a licensed clinical social worker in NY, WA, NC, and TX and has over twenty years of specialized training and experience in PTSD, childhood abuse, mood and anxiety disorders. Melissa brings her background as a classical musician and deep spirituality together in her unique approach in Gestalt's creative and experiential therapy.

Welcome! You are taking a brave first step by seeking therapy. It is natural to want to avoid what is difficult and scary. Unfortunately, this avoidance often reinforces fear and slows healing. My goal is to support you in facing what feels overwhelming at a pace that is safe and sustainable. For the past five years, I have worked primarily with survivors of sexual and relationship abuse, individuals coping with loss, and individuals navigating difficult life transitions. I am passionate about creating a therapeutic space that is safe, warm, and trauma-informed. I utilize a relational-approach informed by evidence-based practice. Some people enter therapy with well-defined goals, while others begin therapy simply with the desire to change. I strive to help you define your individual therapeutic goals and to support you towards these goals at a pace that is comfortable for you. Research has shown that more important to any modality utilized by your therapist is your connection and trust in them. I believe that therapy works best when it is grounded in a genuine and collaborative relationship. I look forward to speaking with you further!
