Therapists for college students near Portland State University
At the heart of every thriving relationship and meaningful life is one core ingredient: human connection. Yet, over time, communication breaks down, life transitions pile up, or stress leaves us feeling disconnected from the people and goals that matter most. If you are feeling stuck, struggling to navigate conflict, or simply wanting to build a life that feels authentic and worth living, you do not have to figure it out alone. I bring 20 years of clinical experience in the mental health field to guide our work together. But more than my years in practice, I bring deep empathy, honesty, and an unwavering commitment to your growth. Therapy is most powerful when you can show up as your complete, authentic self. My practice is grounded in affirmative, culturally responsive care, welcoming individuals from all walks of life, cultural backgrounds, and lived experiences. En este espacio bilingüe y culturalmente afirmativo, podemos trabajar en Español, respetando sus valores y necesidades. Instead of focusing solely on "fixing symptoms," we focus on expanding your life. Combining relational therapies with mindfulness tools, we build concrete life skills for real change. Learn to communicate with kindness, cultivate emotional resilience against stress, and align daily habits to build thriving relationships and a life worth living.
My specialties are self-worth, relationships/attachment and traumas. From our earliest experience, that may not even be remembered, we've learned how to be in relationship. Some things may have been very helpful and other things we learned work against us. Through a lens of relationship much can be understood about ourselves. I offer both weekday and weekend sessions as business hours don't always work. I even offer in-home counseling (additional fees apply) for those who prefer or need me to come to them.

Champion Family Therapy is a small, locally owned practice founded by Jessica Champion, LMFT in 2018. Prior to opening Champion Family Therapy, Jessica Champion had the vision for fifteen years of creating a mental health therapy practice that was family-centered. She saw the need for a clinic that would address the challenges of individuals, couples and families, by incorporating the many facets of recovery, including relational dynamics and core beliefs transferred through generations. From this vision, Champion Family Therapy was born. At Champion Family Therapy, we understand that most people seek therapy after unwelcome challenges in their lives. We are always moved by the desire for change and the risk it takes to make that call. It is our job to meet you where you are with competence and compassion.
I believe that change can occur when a person is provided with a safe and supportive space for exploration and understanding of one’s true self. I work with children, preteens, teens, and young adults from a developmentally sensitive and trauma informed perspective. My approach is based on the belief that the client is the expert on their life and they have internal strength and resources to heal. My role is to accompany you on this journey to find your authentic self. My approach is strength-based, creative and integrates play and humor into therapy. I have specialized training in EMDR, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Mindfulness, Expressive arts, Play and Sand therapy, and sensory processing, I am a culturally competent LGBTQ+ ally and have experience with gender questioning, gender queer, non binary and trans clients
College can be a lot. You’re figuring out who you are and what you want, while also trying to keep up with classes, relationships, responsibilities, and everyone’s expectations—including your own. Sometimes things that felt manageable before suddenly don’t, or experiences from your past start showing up in ways you didn’t expect. I enjoy working with students who want a place to slow down, be themselves, and make sense of what they’re feeling. You don’t need to have the right words or know exactly what you want from therapy. Maybe you know something needs to change, or you just want to understand yourself better. We can start there. I’ll meet you with warmth, curiosity, and respect for who you are and what you’ve been through. Together, we can explore what’s getting in the way, notice what you need, and help you feel more connected to yourself and the life you want to create.
Life can be overwhelming and bring challenges that seem bigger than ourselves. This can lead us down rocky terrain. If you find yourself exhausted, unmotivated, anxious, depressed, feeling helpless or hopeless, know that it is okay to seek help. You can change your path. As a therapist it is my goal to meet my clients where they are on their path, to assist them in learning how to access their inner strengths, to practice self-compassion, and learn to overcome harmful narratives developed from past traumas. I work collaboratively with my clients to help them achieve their goals and live a more fulfilled life. Change can be uncomfortable but with a strong therapeutic relationship and support it can feel more manageable, empowering, and exciting. The core of my practice is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, self compassion work, and mindfulness. I am also a registered art therapist allowing for therapeutic exploration through art for clients who are interested.

I offer a warm and non-judgemental space, integrating multiple therapeutic approaches including client-centered, cognitive behavioral and narrative therapy. I support clients managing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, substance use and relationship issues. I have extensive experience helping young adults and university students navigate their experiences. I believe each of us has a capacity to grow and heal and that the therapeutic relationship provides a context for those processes. I strive to meet each client where they are and I believe that engaging with counseling is itself a step towards healing.
Many of my clients come to me with emotional wounds. They often felt invisible, rejected, devalued, or deeply hurt by others. They learned to adapt to the unsupportive environment by judging themselves, tensing up, trying to control everything, disconnecting from themselves, numbing their feelings, not trusting others, hiding, or trying to please everyone. As time goes by, these strategies stop working and become symptoms we label as depression, anxiety, disordered eating, substance use, PTSD, self-harm, etc. I work with clients to break free from the past and live life in the way they want. I offer a safe space where clients feel seen, accepted and empowered. I collaborate with clients to set goals and identify/build on their strengths. I use body-based therapies (EMDR, SP, Mindfulness, etc) to help clients resolve past trauma. I incorporate ACT and DBT to help clients manage stressors more effectively and live more meaningful/fulfilling lives. As a BIPOC psychologist and bilingual immigrant, I have extensive experience serving clients with marginalized identities. I show curiosity and respect to client’s lived experiences related to their identities and feel honored to be able to support clients in breaking barriers and living up to their full potentials. If any of these speak to you, let’s chat!

As a psychologist, I specialize in working with students - individuals and couples - navigating life transitions, anxiety, relationship issues, and stress. I worked in a college counseling center for four years and have extensive experience working with undergraduate, graduate, and law students. I offer a warm, collaborative space to explore patterns, build insight, and move toward greater clarity, connection, and alignment with what matters most to you. You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected—navigating a life change, relationship shifts, or school pressure. You’re thoughtful and self-aware, but stuck in patterns that aren’t working. You want space to reflect, understand yourself more deeply, and feel more grounded in how you show up in your life and relationships. If you're feeling stretched thin, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward, you're not alone. Therapy can be a place to slow down, reflect, and feel supported as you navigate what’s next. I’m here to listen without judgment and to walk with you through the challenges. When you're ready, I invite you to reach out.
At different times in our lives, we experience hardships that may overwhelm us. These can sometimes be brought on by relationships, careers, family, or health. Or perhaps it is more of a persistent feeling you've grown accustomed to but wish there was a way of changing. The meaning we've made from life's past events serves as a template for how we will process each new experience in the future. My goal is to help facilitate an insight-oriented process of understanding why we feel the way we do and provide a source of strength and a healthy curiosity to lead to a better tomorrow.

The demands of life, as well as ever growing expectations, can cause us to feel disconnected from ourselves, our dreams and the people around us. And as we move through life we can experience challenges that may prompt change, but we may not feel prepared for these challenges. This can cause us to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about how to navigate our future, but these challenges can also be opportunities for growth that can be discovered with the help of a therapist.

Trauma can be an invisible wound that can affect many parts of our lives we don’t even realize. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, adoption triad concerns, and trauma-related issues. Change can be hard. Having the courage to reach out and discuss your inner pain and anxiety is the first step. I want to help you work through your past painful experiences, feelings of shame, and traumatic events so that you can create a new life path. I believe each person has their own pace, and am willing to find therapies and strategies that work for you. My approach is open-minded, trauma-based, cognitive, and holistic. I started my career in psychology and counseling when I experienced a suicide in my family. It gave me the courage to make changes for myself, and help people around me who were also suffering grief, loss, and depression. I’m an advocate of mental health issues, a proud adoptee, and a supporter of the arts. **I only accept insurance in the state of North Carolina**
