Prior to her graduate work, Jennifer attended Stanford University, where she not only earned her bachelor’s degree in International Relations but was also a four-year scholar-athlete and captain of the women’s soccer team. Following her undergraduate studies, she played professional soccer for the New York Power and then worked in the financial and pharmaceutical industries for nearly a decade. College can bring a lot of change—new responsibilities, relationships, family pressures, uncertainty about the future, and the challenge of figuring out who you are and what you want. I work with young adults who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or struggling with confidence and self-esteem. My approach is warm, supportive, and collaborative, with a focus on helping you better understand yourself, navigate relationships and life transitions, and feel more confident moving forward.
Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. As a therapist, I can help you learn to cope with the difficult situations life throws at you. I specialize in life transitions, trauma, and grief, and my practice is located in Smithtown, New York. I can't wait to meet you.
I specialize in working with clients who are experiencing a multitude of challenges, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, disability/chronic illness, identity exploration, and challenges with self-esteem. This can include family/relationship issues, life transitions (including college/early adulthood), or identity formation. I specialize in working with neurodivergent individuals, especially women with ADHD. Supporting LGBTQ+ mental health from an intersectional lens is another focus. I also have an interest in working with clients who are exploring immigrant experience, family dynamics, and generational trauma. I previously worked in college counseling (at Wellesley College) and residential life (at Harvard College), so I'm well-attuned to the specific experiences and challenges of college student life! As a relational psychodynamic therapist, I believe that our experiences are shaped by our relationships with ourselves, other people, and the world at large. My work is informed by feminist, queer, disability, and critical race theory. I also integrate narrative therapy, which allows us to reimagine the stories we tell about ourselves and our lives. I am deeply attentive to how identity and marginalization can impact one's experiences and movement through the world. In my work, I strive for a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive, and socially just practice. I meet clients with curiosity, warmth, and nuance to explore their experiences, relationships, and challenges. My goal is to co-create a welcoming and supportive space in which clients can tell/retell their stories, appreciate their strengths, and work towards their goals

When people come to treatment with problems, it is important to remember that they are trying to cope with them in the best way they can. With that in mind, I offer a reflective and engaging partnership with my clients, working toward the goal of helping them to be autonomous, authentic and compassionate in a world that can be extremely stressful. Although my work is solidly grounded in psychodynamic, cognitive/learning, and systems theories, my approach is client-centered, practical and strengths-based. I bring honesty, warmth, and humor to the therapy relationship. I am LGBTQ affirmative and invested in doing cross-cultural therapy which is culturally sensitive. I have a dog, Bracket, who works with me, and I have been doing AAT since 2002. There is a growing body of research which suggests that AAT (Animal-Assisted Therapy) can be helpful with a range of diagnoses, including Depression, PTSD, and Autistic Spectrum. Many therapists know little about online games such as World of Warcraft and Second Life. They may dismiss it as unimportant, or assume it is a problem. I am a gamer-affirmative therapist, meaning I’m more interested in understanding your in-world experience and activity than pathologizing it.

I am happy to work with anyone who is committed to living a fuller life by learning more about themselves. I am comfortable helping people out with a variety of psychiatric issues, both through medications and / or therapy. I am careful about prescribing medications only when necessary and prefer to minimize their use if the person taking them is on board. Sharing experiences in a safe space can heal wounds and help us grow to our fullest potential. We all have a capacity for joy and fulfillment often buried under bad experiences and layers of protection. I will walk with you on your inward journey and help you make the most of it.
Many college students feel stressed, anxious, or unsure how to handle everything on their own. Between classes, friendships, family expectations, and figuring out what comes next, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or stuck. Therapy gives you a space to process what you’re experiencing, understand yourself more clearly, and build coping skills that actually work in your day-to-day life. I offer virtual sessions, which makes it easier to fit therapy into your schedule wherever you are. My style is warm, supportive, and practical, and we’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
At Balance Mental Health Counseling we have a list of many providers who are interested in working with you on any of our specialty areas such as depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, and trauma. Therapy sessions are goal-directed, future focused, solution focused, and client centered. The therapeutic orientations practiced are Cognitive-Behavioral Mindfulness therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Therapy is a time to learn about oneself, and to apply the skills learned in therapy, to the outside world.
I’m here to help you know all that is possible for you and clear blocks of self-doubt, fear, shame, grief and other very human emotions and experiences in your way of a nourishing, self-loving and joyful life. My approach is collaborative, intuitive and full of heart and is rooted in my own lived experience of healing, learning and emerging. I weave together a range of therapeutic healing modalities including IFS, Hakomi and other somatic, nature-based and anti-oppressive practices. I would love to support you on your healing journey!
