Born and raised in Manhattan, I help patients overcome stress to achieve satisfaction and peace in their everyday lives. As a board-certified therapist with two Master's Degrees (Psychology & Clinical Social Work) and full state licensure, I have the education and experience necessary to treat folks suffering from anxiety, depression, social isolation, interpersonal conflict, addiction, relationship issues, avoidance issues, grief, and more. I've honed my assessment and intervention skills through years of working in the medical field, having studied under some of the most prominent psychologists and psychiatrists in New York City. My style is relational and empathic, but at times challenging. It is important to me that my patients achieve the best therapeutic results. I employ different modalities of treatment rooted in psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral foundations—I help you understand what goals will most satisfy you, why those goals will satisfy you, and how to achieve them. I have centered my practice around a balance between stoicism and idealism. We only have so much control over what happens in life. I can help you build resilience and anti-fragility in reaction to difficult stimuli. If my services feel like the right fit for you, then please call, text, or email for a free consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.

College can break you in quiet ways. Maybe you’re burnt out but still grinding. Anxious but still pretending. You can’t focus, you can’t sleep, you can’t talk about it without feeling like you’re being too much—or not enough. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re just overwhelmed, and no one taught you how to deal with it. This is where that changes. Dr. Al-Katib works with college students who are overthinking everything, underperforming despite trying, and getting swallowed by pressure—academic, emotional, social, or all of the above. He helps with ADHD, anxiety, panic, burnout, identity, emotional numbness, and everything else that comes with growing up in chaos. His style is straightforward, respectful, and never sugarcoated. You’ll get strategy, clarity, and support that actually helps you move—not just talk about it. You don’t have to be falling apart to ask for help. But if you are—good. You’ve already taken the first step.

We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. College and graduate school can be exciting, but they can also feel overwhelming. You may be struggling with stress, anxiety, low mood, loneliness, relationship challenges, questions about your identity, or the pressure to keep up academically while managing everything else in your life. For some students, adjusting to life away from home, navigating independence, or recovering from difficult experiences such as trauma or past hardships can make this time especially challenging. I'm Kate Conway, a Mental Health Counselor Fellow (MHC-F) at Modern Talk, working under the clinical supervision of our licensed directors. Working with college students and young adults is at the heart of what I do — I have a deep understanding of the unique pressures this stage of life brings, and I know how much courage it takes to ask for support when you're in the middle of it. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic and relational therapy — I work with you to understand the patterns, experiences, and relationships shaping how you think, feel, and move through the world, while drawing on practical, skills-based tools when the work calls for it. Whether you're looking for support during a difficult period, trying to better understand yourself, or hoping to build healthier coping skills and relationships, I'm here. I offer a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where you can talk openly, gain insight, and develop the tools to navigate this chapter with greater confidence and resilience.

I take a holistic approach to healing, focusing on Psychotherapy, In my 15 years of experience working with people diagnosed with mental illnesses, and severe traumas, I observed that treatments often ignored holistic methods to healing. Through listening, caring, and working together with my clients, I recognized that some emotional and psychological issues are often managed by initiating small life changes and making healthier choices. My goal and passion is to assist and empower my clients to identify the changes they choose to make to have the life they have desired. I will assist them in achieving their goals while supporting them as they carry out their plans to live a healthier life. Please notes sessions can be face to face or virtual.

The therapists at Groundwork Therapy practice primarily from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective. From this foundation, we integrate cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, solution-focused, and mindfulness techniques depending on each client’s individual needs. We believe that the primary goal of psychotherapy is to develop a deeper understanding of oneself, including greater awareness of compulsive, automatic or problematic patterns of behavior and how one relates to others. We believe that it is through increased self-awareness and self-understanding that individuals gain the freedom to make changes that will allow them to experience more fulfilling lives. We at Groundwork Therapy strive to create a culture of mutual curiosity about our clients’ thoughts, beliefs, feelings, behaviors, and past experiences. We believe that this therapeutic process helps individuals become more aware of those “blind spots” that keep them stuck in dysfunctional and/or unfulfilling relationships, jobs, and living situations. Additionally, we encourage patients to use the therapeutic relationship as a laboratory to safely “experiment” with new ways of communicating and interacting. In addition to guiding self-discovery, the therapists at Groundwork Therapy also foster development of effective skills and tools to better manage and navigate the stress and challenges of life. The therapists at Groundwork Therapy have extensive education, training and clinical experience in gender and sexual diversity. We utilize an affirmative approach to psychotherapy, including using only those labels and pronouns with which our clients identify. While you may identify as trans, queer, gay, sexually fluid, poly, asexual, or simply in love with someone of the same gender, we also recognize that these identities and relationships may have nothing to do with your reasons for seeking therapy. Your sexuality, gender identity, and relationships are only the focus for therapy if you want them to be so.
