Hello! My name is Tanner Craun. I am a Licensed Master of Social Work with 8 years of experience in various areas of the social work field. Currently, I work primarily with adolescents and young adults, but am open to all ages. As a young parent I am passionate about helping the younger generation to develop the skills needed to manage their mental health on a day to day basis. I would love to use my experience to help you build the skills needed to manage the ups and downs of life. I specialize in helping my clients to build life skills, problem solving, and social skills. I typically use an approach that focuses on helping my clients to create real change in their lives while providing a safe space for them to process the everyday stressors of life. If you are struggling to find ways to create healthy change in yourself, I would be a great fit for you. I can't wait to partner together to help you achieve your goals!
As a clinical psychologist, I specialize in work with depression, difficulties relating to trauma and anxiety, and with gender identity and sexuality. My goal is to help you to feel less suffering and to experience a more fulfilling life. A good experience in therapy involves both psychologist and patient. Together, we'll focus on the impacts of low mood, anxiety, low self esteem, or whatever is getting in the way of your life—and how to help you to overcome these obstacles. I have experience working with adolescents and adults who are struggling with a variety of concerns, as well as with those who are GNC or queer. In my clinical work, I use evidence-based practices for conditions such as major depressive disorder, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In my academic role at Bard College, I study and teach on the impacts of mood disorders, trauma, and depressive thought. (I do not usually see current Bard College students who may take psychology classes.)
When you’re in the thick of it – work, kids, stress, relationships, grief, all of it – sometimes what you really need is someone who will sit with you, see you, and help you figure out what’s next. Not someone who rushes to label you. Not someone who nods silently while you unravel. Someone who gets it. Someone who’s lived enough life to understand that healing is about finding peace, one piece at a time. That’s why Counseling with Compassion was founded.
You are really tired. If you’re being honest, your head is spinning & you’re anxious all the time. It’s keeping you from being able to rest, let alone enjoy life. Your thoughts are moving so fast, that it’s hard to stay focused. Now you’re starting to have headaches, racing heart, & tightness in your chest. You’re not sure what to do about it. All you know is that you don’t feel your best & feel that you’ve been letting people down. You feel disappointed in yourself & wonder what is going on with you. Usually things go according to plan and right now that is definitely not happening. It’s starting to become too much. You are really tired. I love supporting college students and have been doing so for the past 15 years. I spent much of that time providing therapy in New York City, before returning to my home town of Fairfield, CT to continue my practice. In addition to in person appointments, I continue to provide telehealth sessions for any students located in CT or NY. I also have experience with this age group in schools, medical and psychiatric hospital settings and in the classroom while teaching at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. I truly enjoy working with my clients and draw upon my own experience and their inherent strengths to achieve change in a welcoming and nonjudgmental environment.

I provide relational, culturally responsive therapy that centers your lived experiences and honors the ways your relationships, history, and identity shape who you are today. I approach therapy as a collaborative space where we can slow down, reflect, and better understand patterns that may be contributing to distress or disconnection. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic and relational cultural therapy. This means I pay close attention to how past and present relationships influence emotions, behaviors, and self-understanding, and how growth often happens through connection, authenticity, and mutual understanding. I also integrate trauma-informed and strengths-based
