As a psychologist, writer and consultant, my favorite population to work with are college students and graduate students, often managing mental health issues, while navigating independence, relationships and larger life choices all at once. In fact, I recently finished writing a book, "College Mental Health 101" based on hundred of interviews and thousands of students I've worked with over the years whose voices are in the pages. Whether its adjustment to school and making career decisions, to identity or family of origin concerns, to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, I love working with students to find ways to improve their life circumstance. I have an academic interest in mindfulness, neuroscience and communication, and teach on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and globally.

Dr. Hu is a Duke-trained adult and child psychiatrist with expertise in anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She worked in prestigious institutions, including McLean Hospital OCD institute, Tufts Medical Center ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) program, and anxiety clinic at Boston University. before joining Harvard Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in 2021. We focus on evidence-based treatment, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In contrary to talk therapy, CBT is time-limited, goal-orientated, client-focused, and skill-based. She provides useful tools and coping skills to manage stress and anxiety for better performance and incorporate dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT) and acceptance committed therapy (ACT) in her approach.

Therapy is a healing tool that can bring us closer to understanding our cognitive and behavioral reactions to the world around us. Addressing issues in a safe, therapeutic relationship can help us to understand, change and adapt to new thoughts and behavior patterns, confront past issues with compassion and kindness toward ourselves and others. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions. I have over 20 years of experience helping people manage crises, navigate life transitions, and finding a deeper connection to themselves and those they care about. I provide individual and couples therapy to adults. My areas of specialty include concerns related to relationships, attachment, trauma/PTSD, dissociation, mood & anxiety disorders, self-esteem, eating issues, parenting and college counseling. I also work with clients who would like to use psychotherapy to improve their general quality of life. My clients describe me as genuine, active, flexible and attentive to their needs. I enjoy my work tremendously and consider it an honor to support and assist my clients via psychotherapy.

Fit is essential to good therapy. When the fit is right, therapy can become a practice space for navigating the complexity of relationships in everyday life. I value an open and collaborative approach so that together we can understand the challenges you face; those that are both in and outside of your conscious awareness. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, questions of identity, work difficulties, relationship conflict, going through a life change, or dealing with family-related stress, I believe that together we can understand and address that which holds you back. The following clinicians work in my practice and are also listed with Thriving Campus: Joel Stanley, Mental Health Counselor, and Dr. Shirley Poyau. I specialize in the treatment of complex trauma, a condition resulting from early and repeated exposure to neglect and abuse on the part of caregivers. I strive to create a space with clients where safety, in the context of a therapeutic relationship, can be experienced in order to promote recovery. I bring an awareness of the body and its various forms of communication into treatment, while also listening for layered meanings contained in the spoken word. I integrate psychodynamic principles and body-based approaches into my work. Social justice, equity, and cultural issues also significantly guide my clinical approach.

Often, a significant source of suffering lies in thoughts and feelings that exist outside of our awareness and have not yet been able to find full expression. Psychotherapy offers the unusual opportunity to be listened to deeply and to learn to listen to ourselves in new ways. Exploring and developing insight into your inner life can lead to change—feeling better about yourself, shifting seemingly intractable patterns that have kept you stuck, and developing a greater sense of agency and fulfillment in your life. My practice provides a safe setting in which this exploration can unfold. I'll work collaboratively with you to help you make sense of distressing feelings and thoughts, gain insight into your experiences, and develop a more authentic relationship to yourself and to the world. I have advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and my work is influenced by psychoanalytic and trauma-informed approaches. I see adults and specialize in a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, complex trauma, and relationship difficulties. I work with teens, college students, and young adults hoping to better manage life's difficulties and troubles with emotion regulation, unhelpful thoughts, and problematic relationships. Ultimately, I believe that people in treatment want to change and feel more fulfilled at school or work, in relationships, and with their sense of personal growth. Psychodynamic psychotherapy emphasizes that we will work on these issues together within a safe and supportive relationship. We can collaborate on your goals as we explore new perspectives, new meanings, and new ways of thinking about and coping with your overwhelming life stress. As a psychiatrist, I also prescribe medication when appropriate. I invite you to reach out and see if we would be a good fit for starting this work.

Therapy can be a wonderful way to deepen your understanding of the ways in which you view yourself and your experiences. Having a meaningful life with purpose and promise is something we all strive for. As your therapist I will support you in developing goals and strategies that help you attain the things you want and form a more compassionate, loving view of yourself. I utilize a collaborative approach that is individually tailored to honor the complexity that each person brings to the counseling relationship. We will work to examine core beliefs you have about yourself and how these affect your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Additionally I have seen the benefits in utilizing mindfulness based therapeutic approaches to help develop awareness and acceptance of our life circumstances. Setbacks happen. When they do, how do you use this information? We choose to view adverse experience as a way to help us move forward more positively or as confirmation that things never seem to work out for us. This is an example of a perceptual shift we might work on. Everything that happens within the counseling relationship is on your terms as the Client. I will always honor your wisdom and help you tap into a decision making process that aligns with your core values. Please contact me for a free consultation to discuss your mental health needs and to determine if we are a good fit. During these stressful and uncertain times, therapy can be a much needed support. I treat individuals 18 and up.

Life pulls us in a lot of different directions, and it can be exhausting. Yet beneath this is a quiet invitation. An invitation to slow down. To reconnect. To breathe deeply and remember who you are. To let your feet find the ground again. And your heart find rest. It's not about fixing everything all at once. It’s about turning gently toward yourself, with curiosity and compassion, and asking: What do I need right now? What is my body telling me? What is my heart longing for? I'd love to help. I'm a licensed therapist specializing in working with young and early adults (18-39). I started my practice because I care deeply about helping people connect with who they are and what they want for their life. Together, we’ll help you nurture a healthy relationship with yourself, make sense of how the past has shaped you, and build a meaningful future. I offer individual therapy to clients across Massachusetts via Telehealth, with in-person sessions coming soon. If you’d like to learn more or schedule a free 30-minute consultation, just click the button—I’d love to connect with you!

September 2025 update: I have very limited availability for in-person sessions, but a little more availability for online sessions. I'll help you to become aware of your painful feelings and to learn to tolerate them, so that you're free to make choices instead of just reacting to life. I am a licensed, independent social worker. I have worked my way up to the management level of an agency, but interacting directly with clients is what I enjoy most. I have experience working with clients who have many different types of concerns, such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression, addiction, and interpersonal problems. I tailor my treatment approaches to the needs and wants of my clients. (If you have some knowledge of treatment approaches, these approaches include psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and motivational interviewing approaches). Besides my Master's in Social Work, I also have a PhD in English, so I am particularly interested in helping clients to use their reading or writing as therapy.

Hello! I help clients seeking to become “unstuck,” to meet new challenges, and to navigate relationships and emotions. I help individuals with anxiety, relationships, stress management, self-esteem, and decision making.
