Seeking mental health care can be difficult and daunting for some individuals, as well as finding the right therapist. My initial goal when meeting with new clients is to create a comfortable environment to get to know you better. My focus throughout therapy is to facilitate positive change, identify patterns that get in your way, and help you build a life worth living. Part of that process invites you to acknowledge your inner strengths and autonomy, while challenging yourself in new ways, even if it's hard. I truly love this work and feel extremely fortunate to be able to do it. I'm happy to meet you over the phone or Zoom for an initial introduction before scheduling an appointment. Feel free to email me, and we'll go from there. I look forward to potentially working with you!

Psychiatrist
Brookline, MA

I am a psychiatrist in private practice for over 20 years, treating patients by integrating psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and, when indicated psychopharmacology. As a physician, I am able to evaluate patients with symptoms which may be medical or psychiatric in origin, understanding the mind-body connection. I see a broad range of patients, some suffering from major mental illness to those healthy individuals seeking to learn more about themselves. A major focus of my private practice is working with college and graduate students. I see students as young as seniors in high school and consult to parents of college age students around the country. I am an Affiliated Psychiatrist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Instructor, Harvard Medical School from 1994-2014. I am a Diplomat, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology re-certified in 2014. I was a staff psychiatrist at Sarah Lawrence College, and more recently, Senior Psychiatric Consultant at Brandeis University from 1997-2012. I believe that every patient is unique, reflecting their development, family history, neuropsychology, traumas, and life experiences. My role is to help the patient develop an integrated personal narrative, exploring unconscious conflicts, understanding the experience of self in relation to others, and to take responsibility, not just for their difficulties, but their strengths as well.

I specialize in substance use disorders and addiction but can help anyone looking to address their relationship with substances, even if you don't think your problem is serious. I also can help with other impulse or compulsive issues such as gaming or internet addiction disorders. I use a Harm Reduction approach, meaning I don't think abstinence from use is the right answer for everyone, and can help identify what skills you need to make the changes you'd like to make. I'm also a trained trauma therapist and have worked with a wide range of clients on addressing numerous types of trauma including combat-related and sexual traumas. My office is located in Harvard Square but I can also provide virtual session (over FaceTime or VSee) for appropriate clients.

Therapy doesn’t have to feel stiff or scary. I believe healing works best when we can laugh, reflect, and be real together. I create a space where you can bring your full self, messy, hopeful, curious, and everything in between. Whether you’re navigating stress, identity, relationships, or just figuring out who you want to be, we’ll work side by side to uncover your strengths and help you move forward. As a social work intern, I’m passionate about supporting people through life’s in-between moments, the chapters that feel uncertain, overwhelming, or full of possibility. I bring an easygoing, compassionate style to therapy, blending evidence-based practices with genuine human connection. My approach is collaborative and non-judgmental: think of me as both a guide and a co-pilot. I work with individuals who want to explore identity, manage stress and anxiety, process life transitions, and deepen self-understanding. I also care deeply about working with young adults, students, and marginalized communities, helping folks feel seen and supported in spaces that often overlook them. Therapy with me is not about being ‘perfect’, it’s about exploring your story, building resilience, and finding ways to grow that actually feel authentic to you."

If you are looking for support with self-exploration and self-esteem; experiencing relationship stress, depression or anxiety; adjusting to life at school or other big changes; or if you just feel like you need somewhere to unpack things you've been carrying for too long -- let's talk. I welcome every piece of your journey with radical acceptance - the grit, the shame, the parts we all try to hide and bury away. The funny thing about those things is, we all have them. I love therapy because it gives that stuff some room to breathe - which gives YOU room to breathe. And reboot. And make plans for what comes next. Over my years in the field, I've developed an approach to therapy that combines creativity and collaboration, focusing on a trusting, safe connection as the bedrock of our work. I utilize a variety of talk and expressive therapy modalities and love approaching things through a non-traditional lens. Connecting with a therapist when you're already struggling can be really overwhelming. Be proud that you're taking this first step right now. With time and space to bear witness to the answers you have within yourself, and a person you trust to help, it becomes easier to feel better and find the ground beneath your feet.

The journey towards self-discovery is a valuable and worthwhile endeavor, deserving of the effort required to connect with one's authentic self. I believe in the inherent capacity for individuals to thrive and undergo meaningful personal growth. Throughout our work together we will create an environment where vulnerability is embraced, challenging conversations occur, and discomfort is acknowledged as a catalyst for growth and change, as we explore and unravel learned patterns that may no longer serve you. My therapeutic approach is characterized by flexibility, adapting to your unique needs and preferences. I highly value your feedback, ensuring that our collaboration is a dynamic and responsive process. Grounded in an intersectional understanding of trauma, neurodiversity, and systemic oppression, I aim not only to delve into your internal world but also to consider the impact of external factors on your well-being. Therapy with me involves taking the time to connect with your joys, struggles, history, and hopes, facilitating a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of yourself. Focusing on complex trauma and neurodiversity, I have a profound appreciation for the richness and complexity of people's stories. I am committed to supporting your growth and change while acknowledging and welcoming all facets of your identity. Furthermore, I am dedicated to my own ongoing learning on social justice topics and anti-racism, recognizing the importance of understanding my own identities (both privileged and marginalized) to create an inclusive and empathic therapeutic environment. I believe that my work as a therapist is not just about individual growth but empowering my clients to recognize and dismantle the damaging and broken systems in their lives. As the therapeutic relationship is central to our work and not every therapist is going to be the best fit for you, I encourage you to take advantage of my 15 minute free consultation. This way we can discuss what you are looking for from therapy and I can answer any questions you might have about starting therapy with me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Life as a young person can be a complex journey, often filled with challenges that leave folks feeling adrift and overwhelmed. If you are someone who is struggling to navigate the intricate web of school/work, family, and relationships, I am here to help. Many college students find themselves feeling stuck, dwelling on the past, or consumed by worries about the future, making it difficult to remain present and truly engage with and take control of their lives and their futures. I meet clients exactly where they are at, offering empathy and understanding, and working collaboratively to promote integration, well-being, and positive change. My approach starts with building a strong relationship, and I draw from a diverse toolkit, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy, tailoring our sessions to the client's specific needs. * I am offering online therapy sessions for MA & OR residents on a HIPAA-compliant platform. Hello, my name is Cynthia (she/her). I am a licensed clinical psychologist in MA & OR. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I served as a public interest attorney in MI and OR. As a psychologist, I continue to work from an anti-oppressive framework, approaching therapy as a collaboration. I specialize in longer-term psychotherapy to enable deeper understanding of the meaning behind manifest symptoms by exploring one’s distinctive history, upbringing, and cultural context as it relates to the present. However, flexibility and collaboration are central to my approach for those desiring brief consultations for specific situations. I draw from psychoanalytic and attachment theories, which value understanding how our internal and external worlds interact. I pay attention to the contextual thread comprising our present selves including our early experiences and the cultural, sociopolitical milieu we inhabit. I have experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds in inpatient/outpatient hospital settings, community mental health clinics, and college counseling centers. I am especially interested in shifting patterns of psychological trauma to embolden one’s sense of agency and increase cognitive and emotional flexibility for a more compassionate and creative sense of being with self and others.
