I believe in the power of my clients to make positive changes in their lives once they gain the necessary insight and skills in our sessions. As a therapist, I seek to empower clients as they explore, express and honor their truth. I draw from humanistic and multicultural frameworks to gain a better understanding of clients’ experiences. To respect the diversity in my clients’ needs, the interventions I use follow an integrative approach, including: interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based methods. I have several years clinical experience working in university mental health settings, and thus have a strong skill-set in supporting the concerns of undergraduate, graduate students and young professionals. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, mood, relationship concerns, identity development, and life transitions. I also have expertise in addressing concerns related to international and immigrant identities (especially Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African individuals). To find out more about my approach and to see whether we might be a good fit, please give me a call for a free phone consultation.

Accepting Clients! - Hi, I'm Julie, a queer mental health professional with over a decade of experience working with adolescents and young adults! I have endured my own journeys with anxiety and depression, and I am passionate about helping others through similar struggles. I specialize in therapy for teens and young adults (age 14-30) who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions (such as adjusting to life during or after college), life-stress, LGBTQ+-related topics, and trying to achieve greater self-understanding. I believe EVERYONE can benefit from therapy, regardless of diagnosis, and provide a safe space for clients to explore whatever it is that is troubling them. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am dedicated to promoting diversity and creating a safe space for people of all backgrounds where YOU are the expert on your own individual experiences. Together, you and I will set goals, consider tools, and delve into the self-understanding necessary to help you achieve your desired outcomes. I integrate techniques from Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients navigate various life experiences and challenges. I operate from a feminist lens which considers both the individual struggle and the larger societal context in which it occurs. I have worked in a variety of settings including schools, mental health treatment centers, and nonprofit organizations. If you are seeking therapy, please email me for a FREE 15-minute consultation! I am currently accepting clients for weekday evenings!

I believe we all grow and heal differently. Sometimes it's through exercise, music, quality time with loved ones or the occasional tv marathon; and sometimes it's through the relationship created in therapy where your whole self can be seen without judgment or shame. I support high schoolers, college & graduate students, and adults dealing with a range of concerns including depression, anxiety, major life & relationship transitions, identity development, as well as those seeking an edge in sport/mental performance. I bring an honest, curious, and eclectic approach, striving to make therapy flexible and interactive. I am solution-focused, often combining IFS and CBT with motivational enhancement, mind-body integration, mindfulness, and positive psychology. I aim to highlight and expand your compassion, courage, confidence, and coping skills. If you are adjusting to something new, discovering who you are, or motivated to make a meaningful change, let's dive in. Together, we will work towards harnessing your inner strengths while mending the parts that make life feel challenging. I look forward to greeting you with patience, acceptance, and warmth.

The transition to college or graduate school can be a time of tremendous change. Adapting to new environments, relationships and levels of independence can feel overwhelming in even the best of circumstances. For those who are navigating mental health challenges, complicated family or friend dynamics, shifts in identity, grief, or loss, that transition can generate feelings of anxiety, panic or paralysis that may affect daily functioning. I was a client long before I became a therapist, so I know how daunting it can be to open yourself up to a stranger – to let them see those private parts of yourself that might have been a source of judgment, fear, pain or shame. It took me many years to ask for help, in part because I viewed it as a sign of weakness. Now, through the lens of both my professional and lived experiences, I see this first step you are taking for what it is – one of the ultimate signs of strength. I honor the courage it took to access that strength. I can’t guarantee that the work ahead will be easy – but you won’t have to do it alone. My goal as a therapist is to meet you where you are and walk with you as you move toward where you want to be. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is authentic, safe and non-judgmental. My approach to our work together is relationship-based and trauma-informed. I believe that therapy is most effective when the connection between client and therapist is grounded in trust and compassion. I invite you to reach out so that we can explore, together, whether I might be the right person to join you on your journey toward new insights, self-awareness and growth. Please note that discounts are available to full-time students on a case-by-case basis.

We are born into mystery and we are on a spiritual quest to know ourselves more fully, to discover our life's purpose and to find our personal power. My therapeutic approach involves accompanying my clients on a journey of self-discovery and self-mastery. For, as Carlos Castaneda wrote, "We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong...the amount of work is the same." Ultimately, my goal is to be a mirror that reflects back to you your own innate goodness, strength and wisdom. We repeat what we don't repair. So, my job is to be a witness to your process of awakening the healer that's already present within you. My therapeutic approach draws from psychodynamic theory, client-centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I also use meditation, aromatherapy and creative visualization as therapeutic tools. My areas of expertise are treating depression, anxiety, grief and loss and trauma (PTSD). In addition to adult clients, I also see adolescents and families in my practice. I believe that therapy is a sacred relationship and a meeting of two souls. In short, it is an invitation to explore and to discover the depths of our own being through the mirror of relationship. If my therapeutic approach sounds like a good fit for you, then please contact me by phone or email to schedule an appointment. Are you ready?

Washington, DC

The Sterling Group is a team of therapists that specializes in supporting college students and young adults. Being an 'adult' and having it all 'figured out' can feel like a lot of pressure. What they don't tell you is the road to adulthood doesn't end in college, when we graduate, or even in the few years following! Life as a college student can be hard and complicated, but therapy doesn't have to be! Our team at The Sterling Group is made up of therapists who 'get it.' We understand today’s unique demands and pressures of being a young adult. We’ve been there ourselves and our expertise is in helping you get unstuck. It is possible to unlearn negative patterns and replace them with new tools to better handle the hard stuff. We’re here to help you regain a sense of empowerment and control over your life and better manage whatever challenges come your way. Therapy doesn’t have to be stuffy or intimidating. Whether meeting virtually or in our office, our priority is to create a space where you feel comfortable and at ease to be yourself. We’re made up of therapists who have been exactly where you are. And we are as goal-oriented and outcomes-driven as the clients we work with. We want you to see early results so you start to see change and gain confidence in yourself and your continued progress.

Online sessions available. Here is what you can expect from me as your therapist: 1) a warm and trusting relationship that allows you to talk about anything and everything in a safe space 2) a space in which you feel heard and attended to, where both important and minor details are remembered and returned to in an effort to examine the full picture over time. 3) genuine feedback that will help you examine yourself and your patterns closely, often providing a new way of understanding yourself and your struggles, and 4) respect for your background and identities, the pace at which you’re comfortable sharing, and your personal goals for therapy. If you have concerns in one or more of the following areas we might be a good fit: adjustment/transitions, relationships and family, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, postpartum/perinatal issues, and/or identity development. I also work with less specific concerns, such as those who are unsatisfied and unsure why. In addition to being a licensed psychologist in DC, I am an adjunct professor and clinical supervisor in the psychology department at the University of Maryland. My research has been published in multiple journals in the field, and I have experience in a variety of settings, including extensive experience with college and graduate students.

My orientation toward counseling is a strengths based approach, where focusing on resiliency and building upon one's abilities are an essential part of managing conflict and confusion. I believe that the therapeutic process has the ability to empower us to gain insight and create new possibilities, allowing us to work through patterns of thinking and behavior to establish more productive coping mechanisms and strategies for when difficulties occur. Together, we will collaborate on constructing goals to help ease distress and gain clarity related to the challenges you are currently experiencing. My training has focused on recognizing how one's background and identity--be it one's race, ethnicity, gender identity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or disability status--informs our worldview. By recognizing and respecting difference, we will work together toward understanding how to best achieve your goals. I have significant clinical experience with late adolescents and adults at university counseling centers including the George Mason University, the George Washington University and American University. My services are reimbursable by most insurance companies.
