I’m Dr. Amy Syper, a licensed psychologist and founder of Strength in Becoming. As a dancer I have seen and experienced the damaging effects of body image distress and eating concerns along with the healing powers of dance. I specialize in eating disorder treatment and have worked with adolescents and adults with eating disorders at all levels of care- from inpatient hospitalization to outpatient therapy. I am passionate about helping clients build a safe and supportive relationship with their body. In addition to “talk therapy” I offer dance/movement therapy sessions to help clients strengthen their mind-body connection, build new insights into emotional experiences, and improve self-esteem. I also have experience working in college counseling centers, supporting individuals with anxiety, depression, relationship stress, identity exploration, ADHD, and executive functioning. I believe in the inherent worth of each person – a value that can be easier to understand than to apply to us in practice, but progress is best achieved when starting from a foundation of self-acceptance. That’s where I come in. I am a therapist specializing in emotional and somatic processing, parts work, and Mindfulness-based interventions for those with complex trauma, identity issues, depression and anxiety, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and more. These struggles may seem impossible to overcome, especially when compounded by the adversity of marginalization, identity struggles, or abuse. My mission is to help you feel whole by building skills, developing self-esteem and healthy attachment, and processing your burdens so they can be put down. This includes attuning to the body, calming the nervous system, finding meaning in life, and healing with the compassion and clarity of the true Self. I am here to be a witness, a companion in your journey, and a fellow human being who truly cares. My approach blends Dialectal Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Exposure and Response Prevention skills with Internal Family Systems-based parts work and guided meditation to release trauma and foster self-compassion. In doing so, you learn to make sense of your experiences within the systems around you and foster healing through connection to self, others, and community. Sessions with me sound like: "What was that look there?" "That made me feel a wave of grief. Did you?" "Let’s pause, if that's okay ... Just breathe into the feeling." "All of your emotions are valid, but not all your thoughts are true." "I have some skills for this..." "Let’s talk to this part of you... What does it need? What protects you from?” Above all, treatment should be intentional and built on trust. If this resonates, let’s discuss what you’re looking for together. During my own therapy journey, I learned what it truly meant to “feel your feelings.” At first, the advice seemed absurd; I thought I felt too much. Over time, though, I learned that most of us are never taught how to process emotions or how to let them go. As a Latina and member of the LGBTQ+ and disabled communities, I have often felt misunderstood within therapeutic spaces, and this journey taught me the power of accessing and overcoming emotions holding us back. My work is shaped by these experiences, and I strive to offer inclusive care that centers around each person’s unique strengths and needs. When I am not providing therapy, I love to read fantasy books, write poetry, and make art. Dancing and playing sports in the park are also some of my favorite activities, especially with festive drinks and snacks, and some friends.
Are you struggling with anxious thoughts, angry outbursts, feeling overwhelmed and sad? Do you find yourself always putting others first at the expense of your own needs? Have you been ignoring your feelings and find they are starting to feel out of control? I specialize in helping adults and teens build healthier coping strategies, manage emotions more effectively, and let go of negative habits. Whether you’re looking to learn new skills to regulate your emotions, learn to make life more manageable or improve your relationships with family and friends, I’m here to support you every step of the way.In our first sessions, you can expect a safe, non-judgmental space where we’ll explore what’s going on, identify your goals, and start taking small steps toward meaningful change. What makes my practice unique is that I don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” therapy. We’ll tailor the process to your needs—whether you want to reduce stress, improve relationships, or work toward recovery. I’m passionate about this work because I’ve seen how powerful it is when people feel supported and discover their own resilience. You don’t have to face this alone—healing is possible, and I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but with the right one by your side, true healing can begin. As a clinical social worker specializing in individual psychotherapy, my goal is to make that process feel a little less daunting by offering a collaborative, supportive space where you can show up as you are. My work centers on older adolescents and adults navigating mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, as well as those moving through life transitions, grief, loss, or anticipated loss. As a queer clinician, providing identity-affirming care is also central to my practice, particularly for those exploring sexuality and gender, or who face systemic barriers to self-expression and self-actualization. If you choose to work together and the connection feels right, I'm confident we can do meaningful work. My approach is strengths-based, relational, and grounded in a person-in-environment perspective, which means I consider you within the greater context of your life, your relationships, and the systems that shape your daily experience. All of my work is rooted in a social justice framework, and a deep belief in every person's inherent dignity and worth. Together, we'll explore the events and relationships — both past and present — that inform how you move through the world, building deeper self-understanding and self-compassion along the way. You can expect a warm, accepting, and responsive environment where the therapeutic approach is tailored to your unique needs and preferences. That often means blending meaningful self-reflection with a growing toolkit of practical skills and techniques you can carry with you outside of our sessions. Before becoming a therapist, nearly a decade was spent working as a professional musician, an experience that instilled a deep appreciation for the courage and vulnerability that authentic self-expression requires. Sitting with our emotions, sharing them, and exploring them can feel scary, but it can also be genuinely beautiful, opening doors to connection and self-discovery that might otherwise stay closed. At my core, connecting with people has always been what drives me. That's why authentic curiosity, empathy, and an open mind are things I bring to every interaction. My education, lived experiences, and professional background all converge in service of one goal: creating a space where you can work toward better understanding yourself and expressing who you truly are. Outside of the therapy room, you'll find me singing, traveling, or cooking and baking for the people I love. Shared meals with friends and family are something I treasure deeply, as are deep belly laughs and adventures with my husband and our dog, Bagel.

Prior to private practice, I worked in college counseling for three years. My style as a therapist is to provide much warmth, curiosity, compassion, and humor to help each client engage in a productive way of understanding themselves and their mental functioning. I take a holistic approach that encompasses the mind and the body. Although I work with many presenting concerns, I have noticed a commonality of how people are self-critical and subsequently experience declines in their mental health and relationships. I work with each client to develop self-awareness and coping skills to help decrease their mental health distress.
I am originally from California, but have called Colorado (Denver) my home for the last thirteen years. While I do miss the ocean, I love being in the mountains and all they have to offer. When I am not working, I am often playing in my garden, doing something in the kitchen, spending time with friends and family, or traveling. I am the same person during session as I am outside of session; laid back, a little goofy, genuinely curious about others’ lives, and compassionate. I use she/her pronouns. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) and am licensed to see clients in Colorado, Indiana, Florida and Nevada. I have been practicing therapy since 2013 and truly enjoy working with my clients. I love learning about how trauma and stress can impact our minds, bodies and nervous systems and the ways we can heal and start to feel better. I am a Certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist as well as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). I often use a mixture of EMDR, Somatic Experiencing (SE), attachment, parts focused, and mindfulness techniques to help clients begin to unpack stressful or traumatic events and begin to integrate a sense of healing back into their minds and bodies. These techniques can be helpful for clients struggling with anxiety and depression symptoms, who have experienced one or more traumatic events, substance use, emotion regulation, or uncomfortable body sensations.
I work with older teens and adults who experience trauma symptoms, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and identity issues, LGBTQIA2S+ concerns, or other life transitions. I believe a strong therapeutic relationship prompts fuller connections in other areas of life - to oneself, to others, and to the environment. We will work to discover your personal values, explore and process patterned behaviors and relationships, and uncover and utilize your own strengths to take steps towards achieving personal goals. My approach is trauma-focused and person-centered, including a background in psychodynamic therapy, somatic attachment theory, parts work, TF-CBT, and holistic wellness.
