Christina Barnard
So many young adults are struggling to adjust to new experiences like going to college and moving out. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed just thinking about living on your own and wondering how your friends are so easily moving out of their parents’ home. College sounds like a logical next step and you’re wondering how to make the leap. The idea of landing a job may seem scary and intimidating. Relationships with friends and partners may also be changing, leaving you lonely and uncertain. This can all result in your friends moving on with their lives and you feeling left behind.
Trying to leave the comfort and security of the nest can be harder if you are battling old habits you have never looked at or believed you could change. Qualities like trying to be perfect, avoiding tough issues, putting things off and a lack of self-confidence can all add to the struggle of becoming more independent. Many young adults also suffer from severe anxiety, depression or past trauma. When we add in that life skills may not be your strong suit and you may depend on your parents more than other young adults your age do, you have the perfect recipe for failure to launch.
Just recognizing what is happening is such a positive first step! Individual therapy is a great place to start for anyone struggling with failure to launch. One of my favorite things to help clients uncover is their spark; the thing in life you feel most passionate about! Let’s get you motivated and doing things you excel at. Learning healthier ways to cope, ditching old habits and feeling better about yourself will get you on track to creating a fun, happy and fulfilling life.
